My advice is to use Flares to make the Taken back off, and then run; every opportunity you get. Try not to fight unless you have absolutely no other choice. My other piece of advice is to play the game initially on Normal, skip Hard difficulty and go straight to Nightmare for your second run. The difficulty isn't a huge leap and Nightmare unlocks once you complete the game, no matter what difficulty.
