"Play Mafia II", they said, "It's one of the best sandbox games ever", they said.
Yeah, I already know I'm gonna get flak for this review but whatever.
Mafia II is highly overrated.
Pros:
- Mildly interesting story with mildly interesting characters.
- Good driving mechanics.
- A well captured 1940's and 1950's atmosphere.
- Good story acting and great graphics for the time of release.
Cons:
- Awful shooting mechanics.
- It's not really "sandbox" or "open world". The story is linear and none of the people that you meet have missions for you outside of the main story. Sure, you can bring a couple of guys cars but... boring. You can simply explore the map after any given mission.
- Without fail, every single time you earn money it is somehow taken from you; it burns up, you owe your mob family money, you have to repay someone elses debt, etc.
- Not that the above really matters. All you're going to spend your money on is upgrading one or two cars and buying a couple of suits.
- Not a huge wardrobe variety to pick from even when you do go shopping.
- What you buy doesn't matter anyway, you lose it all during Chapter 10, the chapter right after you gain a lot of money.
- Crappy, cop-out ending.
