I have been looking at Loddlenaut since it was announced. Cleaning in video games is just so much fun and also having to take care of such cute critters, it sounded just like the game for me. And I wasn't wrong in my judgment, as the game is adorable!

You play as this human whose job it is to clean up the ocean after some sort of company made a mess by doing some experiments or something like that. So you'll clean up all the litter that is left behind, but also some sort of purple goo. You'll go from region to region to clean up the mess, equipped with a handy scanner to tell you if there is any mess close by. While having an area clean enough, you'll see those little creatures start living there.

All the items you pick up you'll recycle and build upgrades with them, like a bigger oxygen tank, or being able to suck up more plastic with your plastic vacuum. After cleaning an area for 100% there will also appear a hub that can store items for you and that allows you to transport you back and forth between the hobs. However, I wish that it wouldn't take 100% cleaning an area before the hub unlocks. So many times I just needed 1 more backspace to collect those last few items before 100% the area or just ran out of oxygen too early. Or you have to go back to the base to buy a new upgrade. In the beginning, I didn't mind the back and forth between a new area and the base area or an already unlocked hub, but after a while, it became a bit annoying.

I'm so happy that none of the achievements are missable. This made it possible to just enjoy the game and not to worry about the achievements while playing through it. I'm a little unsure if this was the best strategy as it made the time to get all the different loddles a waiting game, instead of doing it while doing other things, but this way I only had to look that up after finishing the game. The hardest achievements are to maximize the population in each area and create all those different loddles types. A HUGE tip for that last one.. in the logs you can see which loddles you already have found. On the Steam forum, the developers said they were thinking about adding a way to easily see which ones you're missing, but for now, checking back the logs is doable.

I had a lot of fun with Loddlenaut, and it shows an important message about how we litter our oceans and that it impacts not only the human race but all kinds of ecosystems.

I give Loddlenaut 4.5 out of 5 stars.
